Photoshop is the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink editor, while Fireworks 
is more like ImageReady's badass older cousin, geared strictly for web 
graphics.  IIRC (haven't played with it since v7) a huge percentage of 
Photoshop's features are irrelevant to web graphics.  Also, FW's 
features manage to successfully span vector & raster images and 
animation and various effects.  So yeah, IMHO FW is pretty hot.  That 
said, if you know Photoshop back to front, maybe it's not worth your 
time to learn a new tool.

Ah, and as I type this here's Tim's post about Adobe's plans with FW & 
IR.  Cool.
