Bruce,

A couple very popular recommendations are Drupal http://drupal.org 
and Joomla http://joomla.org. I have experience with both of these 
and can help if you'd like. Very generally, Joomla has more eye 
candy and Drupal more code compliancy, but they're both very 
powerful CMS designed for collaborative environments between admins 
/ editors / users / etc. Since they're open source the engines can 
be customized for just about any application.
