Correct, a proxy server, firewall or other similar device often masquerades
its own MAC address as it is actively managing the connection between the
nodes. This solution will not work as expected.

For my own interest, is it not the case that a single MAC address can
represent all interfaces behind it as in the case of certain routers or a
shared wireless connection?
