Go with a subdomain. Your main site already has a certain amount of 
traffic/brand-awareness; add a subdomain and you can piggyback off that 
success OR start a new completely different domain (even if it's 
similar) and you're pretty much starting from scratch again (0PR, 0 
daily visitors...)
  Subdomains, although technically part of the same site, are seen by 
Google as separate domains (multiple listings, each with different 
pagerank; a link from domain.tld to sub.domain.tld counts toward 
increased pagerank just as a link from domain.tld to differentdomain.tld)
