[thelist] Video on own site or via YouTube?

Dan Stockton had some good things to say about YouTube usage:

>>Don't discount the possibility of hosting videos on your own
>>website just because YouTube is available yet neither discount
>>the idea of hosting on YouTube just because you have your own
>>website. Supplement the disadvantages of one with the advantages
>>of the other. You needn't choose only one, do both.

I agree with Dan. Use both - but use only where applicable. And by
that I mean that you may want to think through the whole 'user
experience' thing here.

On one hand, I probably wouldn't want to answer inquiries from potential
investors / venture capitalists by sending them a link to an 'about my
company' video sitting on YouTube. There might be some situations where
that would 'work' but I think there are a lot more where that would be
seen as a negative.

On the other hand, if I were a company like Blendtec then I certainly
wouldn't mind putting a few of my "Will it blend?" videos up on YouTube
to increase brand awareness. (Presuming, of course, that I could do so
without reliquishing any ownership/repurposing rights that I may not
wish to give up by uploading to YouTube.)

I think you need to think through what it is you are trying to
accomplish and then determine when and where YouTube might be a good fit
for your needs.

RonL.
