[thelist] OpenSource Project Planning

Hi there,

we've developed over the recent years a successful data portal. We've
received a couple of times already requests from Environmental
Ministries and others to get a copy of the code, so that they could
just insert their data and have a nice tool for visualizing and
distributing (in most cases public funded) data.

So, we're thinking about turning the portal into an opensource
project, where

	a) more professional programmers than we are (we are only learning-
by-doing-guys, with a geographical and no programming background)
could plug-in and turn the code into something more flexible, modular
etc.

	b) anybody could add new functionalities (for visualizing the data,
for downloading the data in other formats, etc.)

	c) anybody could then download the package, update outdated once
without major hassles etc.

I have no idea where to start looking for some right approaches
(beside: looking for someone to fund it.... :-)) . Can anyone point
me to some resources that would be worthwhile looking at?

Thanks a lot,

Stef
