Hmmm, I just tried making the URL to call http://www.bbc.co.uk and I got back:
Resource id #4

I did note that the URL I'm trying to 'hit' is fomatted:
http://www.site1.com?rawGateway.aspx?XMLURL=http://site2.com%26variable1=111%26vairable2=222

and so on.
I tried replacing ' :// ' of the second URL with : ' :// '
but that still fails...

So I'm thinking it may be connected with the second URL and the URL encoding?
