I have the same 3WARE card - they offer pretty good performance for the price.

But now you need to worry about backing the thing up, or what happens if your RAID controller dies in 3 years time :-)

I opted for:
3ware 9650SE-8ML
8 x 1Tb drives and RAID 6 config...

Plus a dual core CPU and a decent board, 2Gb RAM and ICY DOCK hot swap
bays..

Your advise and words were very helpful!
Now I just gotta load my many 1Tb externals onto it! that'll take forever!!!
