Well, from their point of view it's not.

It could be a field in any other database you happened to be using,
assuming you're using one at all, which /isn't/ a given.

And despite it being presented as numeric, who cares? You could
store it as a string -- it's not like you're going to be adding them :-)

it could equally be relevant to the specific programming language
you're using -- say a Java Integer vs. Double vs. ....

And so on... It's not Authorize.Net's job to know every application on
the other end of the wire -- that's why we /have/ web services  :-)
