As far as I know, HTML entities explicitly refer to glyphs in ISO
8859-1 & ISO 10646, but it doesn't mean your responses need to use
those character sets.  You just need to use a font which contains
those glyphs, especially for Internet Explorer, e.g. Lucida Sans
Unicode.  This may further limit your choice of fonts when considering
cross-browser compatibility.
