/etc/init.d/mysql initdb

is the way to initialize the db for fedora core. Also, you may wanna check
that you have started the mysql daemon,

/etc/init.d/mysql start

to check the status of the mysql daemon if ubuntu supports it.

/etc/init.d/mysql status

You always have the option of pitching baseballs at empty spray paint cans
