Arguably you should do both, but tbh, I've never found reading docs as  
quick as typing:
apt-get install phpmyadmin
;-)

Seriously though - phpmyadmin is great for quick references to what  
dbs, tables and fields are on there (although not as useful as a  
bloody good diagram).

And for giving that kind of info to people you may not want to have  
SSH accounts.
