Worth knowing: Drupal handles this nicely in the admin interface -  
arbitrary redirection of old URLs to new ones.

Which we're doing on www.evolt.org for a *lot* of old URL schemas

eww that's nasty. Does Joomla not support cleaner URLs yet?
