[thelist] Payment offsite or on site?

I think that using PayPal on websites has gotten way more mainstream and
reliable, so I don't think it would be a deterrent to buying on your site,
esp for non technical people.

Did you look in to authorize.net? Besides the fact that the subscription set
up is COMPLETELY different than the one time payment set up (ie the credit
card expiration date is 2009-01 on one of them and 0109 on the other, go
figure!), it was pretty easy to use. You can google and find classes so you
don't have to reinvent the wheel. So it looks like you are doing it
yourself.

I'd definitely agree with what Joel said, you have to take a good look at
the target audience.

For instance, my first thoughts when visiting a new site are influenced with
the quality of presentation. If a site looks shady, I'm certainly not going
to give up my credit card info, but I *might* if the option of using PayPal
exists because I can trust them.
On the other hand, if its an established brand/website, then I might be
curious to why they are using PayPal. For instance, it would seem odd to me
to buy a book from O'Reilly using PayPal on their site.

Just some really quick thoughts, HTH
