I've had trouble in Spain using a pay as you go wifi connection. I could not
connect to certain sites. I changed the providers default DNS to the OpenDNS
dns servers and I was ok. Didn't have time to go into it as it worked and I
was happy. Sounds suspiciously similar.

I also dropped the DNS acronym over the phone - a convenient out. Me 
too,  not a network guru.  If so though, would it likely be the shop's 
broadband provider?  If it were hostgator wouldn't I have been affected 
as well?
