Uh, well. We're a long way past 2002  :-)

My iPhone 4s resolution is 960x640, and it's just one example of
the proliferation of hi-res touch devices, which totally change the
usage model. Swiping left-right to view carousel-style displays is
easy and intuitive, unlike trying to click on a horizontal scrollbar
with a mouse.

And given the number of laptops with built-in touch pads and the
introduction of touch-screen laptops, non-mouse-driven interaction
is becoming ever more commonplace.

So I'd say the question is really how big is your 'swipe' (hand-held)
audience, and does horizontal motion make sense in that context?

Props to Jakob for all his research, but today, 11 years later, it may
not be such a clear-cut issue :-)
