Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

-------------------- Start of message text --------------------

I think it's very much because in a medium where you don't see
people working every day, you only know their capabilities from
what they publish.

For all you know I could just be an advanced Perl script...

This makes developing rapport and trust quite a challenge, particularly
when you don't have an extended period of time to gauge a person.

If you're in a position of leadership (whether it's formal leadership, or
thought leadership (eg book writing or consultancy), or being hired
to work as a developer), *anything* you do to support the Brand of You and
your Brand values of competence is really, really important.

Some people do it really well - although the line between strengthening
the Brand of You, and relentless narcissism is a fine one. Some people
think that most of the 'web personalities' you know (y'know, the ones with
a single label (randomly chosen examples: Veen, Taylor, Zeldman,
Winer, Aardvark)) have stepped over that line. I'm sure that some of them
have on occasion. And putting a photo of yourself on the cover of your
book could be thought to be crossing that line. It's not necessarily so,
but
you could get that feeling, yes.

Cheers
Martin

i'm still trying to figure out why someone would put a picture of their
face on a web development book.. or any internet related book for that
matter.
