There is a Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album called 'Murder Ballads' --
perhaps that was it? Historically they are quite closely related to
nursery rhymes. Although only a few nursery rhymes seem to circulate
now in anything resembling their original form. Some of the Grimms'
fairy tales can be quite gruesome... 14th to 19th century children
must have been plenty scared going to sleep.

Which brings up odd images of the old Genesis "Nursery Crimes" album.
Eeeek!

Getting back to fairy tales ... I find it really kind of neat to read the
same fairy tale from different editions published in different years ... the
changes over time as well as the elements that stay the same can be kind of
interesting ... [e.g. Cinderella attended three balls at the palace in
earlier versions of the story.] ... although ... this kind of thing is
probably only interesting to really strange people who collect [children's
literature from 'classic' illustrators] and read things like that!

Sometimes the differences can be quite startling ... the original Dr.
Doolittle books would probably be banned in schools today for containing
certain racial slurs! I know I was pretty startled when I came across it in
a first edition.
