Howdy,

I don't know abut the overall trend, but in the Star
Trek world of emerging technologies, this sort of
precociousness is pretty realistic.

I know in my younger days I was the designated
VCR/digital watch time setting for my family (when
such gadgets where new to most poeple).  Of course
that was just warm up for the spread of PCs.

ST:TNG never suggested the boy should be head of
engineering; he was just a big geek.
