I've always gone back to Salman Rushdie, although of course
he has a cross-cultural perspective.

"Midnight's Children" is wonderful
"Haroun and the Sea of Stories" is a wee glittering jewel -
    one of the few kids' books which really has layers for adults
    as well.

(if on holiday and relaxing (ie not doing anything I don't have
to) I can read 2 books a day...)
