Try starting at:
http://www.linux.org/dist/english.html

and finding the one that suits your needs. Scroll down for 'mini and
specialty' distributions. Several linux and bsd distributions allow
you to install over the internet. Suse's net install is o.k. But I
find the post-install configuration / update utilities bloody
annoying. YMMV. Debian also has a similar net install system:
http://cdimage.debian.org/ -- you probably shouldn't download cd
images, just the boot disks, and go from there. You aren't likely to
have any freaky driver problems with a machine that old and debian.

Linux.org also has a list of places where you can d/l distros for
'free' (depending, of course, on the terms of your isp's service):
http://www.linux.org/dist/ftp.html

But, what's the problem with freebsd? I mean, the differences aren't
that pronounced from a user's point of view.

HTH
