Yes, for items which have ISBNs (DVD players don't) - particularly useful
for books which have different editions (eg the adult cover version of
the Harry Potters). If someone else (the publisher) has worked out all
the
problems of how to map product to id, then why reinvent it?

It makes it very easy btw to swap between the .com and the .co.uk -
as the catalogue id for an item will be the same between the 2
(assuming that the same ISBN is available in both countries).
You can just swap .com for .co.uk and vice versa.
