One comment I found interesting:

My kids have gradually taken less and less heat for their polite refusal to
recite it thru the years, but I sure don't remember anything voluntary about
it 30 years ago. I was bullied, badgered, and harrassed by nearly every
teacher I had up until my senior year in high school.

Sometimes I'm not sure which side of 'political correctness' I'm on ;)
