I guess they are "romances" if a romantic relationship is central to the plot... regardless of whether the rest of the film is a thriller, comedy, drama, whatever. And, some films are on multiple lists. Chaplin's "City Lights" is in the top 100 romances, top 100 comedies, AND top 100 films. So where is "Rear Window" ?

Minor grammatical point:

"film noirs" or "films noir"? Wouldn't the plural go on the noun rather than the adjective?
