yeah, it's definitely an acquired taste

i learned bridge in high school (i.e. 30 years ago), but have not played it
regularly since

last time was maybe fifteen years ago

but i read the bridge column daily

i agree with your assessment, though -- like anything, bridge has its own
language, and a tremendous amount of it refers to stuff that you only learn
after encountering it in action

by way of comparison, if you boil down today's thread on thelist about
whether to use B or STRONG (or, saints preserve us, SPAN), you'd come up
with a phrase like "don't use B when you really mean STRONG" which is kind
of like "third hand high" in bridge -- a rule it would be wise to follow
unless you really know what you're doing
