Researchers were trying to produce an oscillator by utilizing software-based switches programmed with a genetic algorithm designed to reward the production of oscilliatory behavior. They ended up getting oscillatory behavior, but not because the circuit became an oscillator, but because it became a radio that picked up the oscillations from other machines.
