I once read a very simple thing that made entirely too much sense:

Calories In - Calories Required - Calories Expended = Caloric Deficit or
Caloric Surplus*

Deficit == you lose weight, Surplus == you gain weight. It ain't simpler
than that. How you maintain that equation is up to you, but there it is.
Eating at home helps you count more accurately, that's for sure. But
take it from this bachelor, being aware and making concessions about
where you eat can work, too.

The lesson I took from everyone doing the Atkins thing around me was
this: White flour is BAD. Fried foods, on the whole, are BAD. These two
fixtures or our American diet are co-conspirators in making everyone
fat, lazy and unable to do anything except consume more. Not that I've
an opinion about it.

Joe, you're kicking ass. It'll take time, but you'll get there. I
planned for and expected it to take me a year to drop the weight I
wanted to. I did it by reducing (not cutting out, because anything done
drastically tends to be temporary) the quantity of white flour in my
diet, the relative size of my meals, and I made a concerted effort to
not eat late (after 7pm), and if I did, I ate very little. Now, I was
already on a 4-day a week (or more) exercise schedule, with hockey and
whatnot, so my changes were centered on diet. It worked. I dropped 20
pounds in the first 4 months, then over the next 8 it whittled away.
Lost a total of 40lbs, and have maintained the 200-205 lbs range since
May. There's a part of me that would love to break the 200lb barrier,
but I'm slowly accepting that my body (at 6'3" and bigger frame --I'm no
Bob ;) ) is supposed to be in this range.

Elfur, Joe, Mad, and anyone else here werkin on their bodies, my cheers
