iTunes on the Mac is genius at this. Absolutely wonderful interface for
searching and sorting. Really.

I realize you're all mostly on windows and this might be unhelpful -- but
being to type "eye know" in the iTunes search field and get the precise
song I want by De La Soul is wonderful.

I also really like smart playlists, which let me instantly make lists

In my old Amiga days I kept a spreadsheet of everything I owned-  LPs
cassettes, etc. But that's overkill now.
