I completely agree with this line of thinking.

At least in Kenya, if somebody gets car jacked and is carrying
a hand gun -- more often than not the gangsters will subject the person
to a very severe beating (or) a bullet .
(the car jackers mistake  you for an undercover policeman, the kind
of people most likely to carry a weapon  -- and of course the
gangsters *really* hate the police)

On the other hand, if you didnt have a weapon more often than not
they will be simply let you go and even be pleasent about it
 (of course, after taking what they want :) ).

Similarly with house break-ins, I read about fatalities only when there
is a mention of the house owner taking on the burglars with weapons.

(-- recently there was this news story about a sikh family where dad
and son were shot dead after dad & son decided to take on the
burglars with a kirpan (a sword).
sword v/s automatic weapon .... you know who won...)
