Oops, meant "is" not "isn't": beating a kid is bad. Reasoning with 
them, grounding them and looking for weapons of mass destruction in 
their sock drawer is good. If they can't break a habit of using WMD, 
beating the hell out of them might be an reasonable last attempt at 
correcting their behavior. Iraq has played well with others since the 
UN grounded him and kept an eye out for WMD in his sock drawer.
