Oh man, I forgot about that!

Hey, my old Ampeg had a two-position toggle switch on the front 
labeled: "Polarity". 

If that sucker hummed loudly when you turned it on, you just flipped 
that toggle switch and the hum would be significantly reduced.

I am electronically 'reclined' so I can't tell you, technically, how 
that worked ... but maybe some local hardware junkie could bolt 
something like that on for you.
