After Škoda were bought by VW, they started using VW tech for next-gen Škoda 
products, i.e. the Fabia, Octavia, etc.  They really are good cars, although 
their previous reputation as shitboxes is played upon a lot by VW's 
marketing campaigns in the UK :)

But saying they've "always" been the cheap European car is a truth that's 
been eroded greatly in the past 5-10 years or so.
