   Well put, Hershel. I think part of the reluctance, though, stems
from the fact that, well, we're not there.

   Put it this way: I used to get enormously annoyed with people from
outside the British Isles talking about the conflict in Northern
Ireland, when they took sides, or said, "Why don't you..." - which was
always. I'd prefer to spare anyone who's in the thick of it that
annoyance.

   These days, when discussion of the North comes up, I take a deep
breath, say nothing until I'm asked, and then pronounce my opinion:
They're all wankers, both sides. The real people aren't taking sides.
