Vista is not my favorite OS by any means, but I've been running it on my
laptop for nearly two years now and I've never noticed it to take any longer
to shut down than XP does on my desktop. The biggest issue with VISTA is
that you really need at least 2 GB of RAM. My laptop only has 1 GB and when
I get FF, IE, Zend IDE, Outlook, Filezilla, etc. open it starts to lag a
bit. I haven't played SIMs since it first came out, but I remember it
requiring quite a bit of RAM so more is better.

I was pricing desktops earlier this week and noticed that Dell is now
selling computers with Vista + an XP downgrade license so you can use either
OS. At one point I remember seeing somewhere that MS also has a site where
you can downgrade your license.
