Uh, not to alarm you, but the only times I've had file systems go
"read only" out of the blue meant the drive was about to fail.

I would try to get a current dump to another drive/DVD ASAP and
then look at what disk diagnostics you have available...

And I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone has a happier story
for you :-)
