There's also a bit of a security thing with content as it maps onto 
approval rights on the site, so having it as an entirely open sign up, 
or merged with the other lists, would be problematic. Also, on 
occasion, people will insist on sending their passwords via the contact 
form.

Historically (and currently), the content group has felt a bit uneasy 
honestly discussing people's work with public archives, so it has pw 
protected archives.  While of course, if the org insisted that the 
archives were open, they would be opened, I have a strong suspicion 
then that the actual work would go offlist, which would be A Bad Thing.
