Removing the date would be a good temporary measure, but there's currently 
no class/id specific to the front page, so this is the best we could manage:

div.node-sticky div.postinfo { display: none; }

And that may have repercussions elsewhere in the site.

Elfur is also right, it does have too much prominence, having more impact 
than the most recent article. But that's something for a redesign to deal 
with I think.
