fairly tasteful
i would like to point out that these are more thumbnails than photos, being
75x105 (the first one) and 56x76 (the others), and thus they occupy a very
small footprint compared to the copy
if we did the same on our front page, there's no way they could be the same
size photo as jeff's (170x86)
so then we'd have to either support mutiple photos (yuck) or (my
preference) use just one small photo
it isn't just the photo on the article page i object to, either, it's that
whole mass of author stats as well
again, if we're gonna include author stuff on the article page, and not
include all of it, like phone number and cat's name, then we're just
haggling
>Check out the perspectives home page at:
http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1013.html
again, tasteful 65x82
>And the photos in individual columns:
170x110 but still tasteful
maybe i'm coming around... ;o)
but notice the absence of author stats at the top
i guess my objection is that all that author info detracts from the
article, which the simple photos in the examples you gave above do not
speaking of example sites, check out how the author info is handled on
digital-web.com
http://www.digital-web.com/features/feature_2001-8.shtml
the author's name is linked to an author profile page
at the bottom of the article is a short bio, but again, the author's name
is linked to the profile, and the photo is on the profile
returning for a moment to the issue of photos on the front page, we have
not yet mentioned the logistical problem of obtaining photos along with
article submission, further delaying the publishing process, and the
tackiness of having photos for only a very small number of articles -- and
it wouldn't take a lot of reflection to notice that the only articles with
photos are mostly those by evolt "insiders"
finally, you mentioned "look and feel" being important -- and how could
anybody argue with that? -- but the overwhelming impression i get from the
sample page (http://test.evolt.org/article/thesite/17/8869/#rating) is that
there is undue emphasis on the author, almost as if we were insecure and
attempting to bolster the legitimacy of the article by pimping how good the
author is, and in my opinion, we don't need to do that
the cubes does the same (bolstering legitimacy), although in a very
tasteful way
