Anyway .. enough of the personal stuff .. on to the evolt stuff. It's been a long time since we rolled the test code from test.evolt.org up to production (i.e. www.evolt.org). In the change log (http://test.evolt.org/CHANGELOG.txt) I notice Jeff's made a number of changes over the past couple of months. Reading through the changelogs and trying to remember ;) .. I think anything listed under changes to 0.7.1 have been rolled up .. but it was so long ago, I can't be sure. However, I know the code on SF was not updated since the 0.7 version. During the past year or so, I've been one of the main testers on the test site. Meaning I hit that site very frequently and test various pages at different priv levels, etc. Looking for any bugs or problems that need to be sorted out before we can roll the code up to production. That's the reason we have a test site .. so it can be thoroughly and well tested. Anyway .. in my absence over the past couple of months, I don't think anyone has been doing this. As I mentioned above and as can be seen from the changelog, there are a lot of changes that were made and that haven't been tested. So, what do we need? Testers!! Hit the test site, report any problems to this mailing list. If you have Admin or GodMin privs (i.e. 3/4), set yourself up a testing user name, so that you can log in as a regular user. Hit various pages, using different links, i.e. the sidebar elements, the drop down box, the comments, etc. Then repeat the same thing as a non-logged in user. Again, reporting anything odd/obscure to thesite list. Ideally, there should be more than just Jeff working on the source code. Now before a bunch of people start screaming and saying, "I would if I had access" .. be realistic. The majority of the code is written in CF .. so those with CF expertise should be the ones reviewing/modifying the core code. However, since as far as I'm concerned, the code is Jeff's "baby" .. communication is key. IOW .. don't go messing up the code or changing things around without checking with Jeff first. If there are CF experts that want access and have the time available to learn the architecture and to work with Jeff, then speak up. You won't get access just cause you want it. Anyway, I'm not saying there is a definite need at this time for others to be editing the code. However, I do think there is a need and a desire to have other CF experts at least reviewing and discussing the code. If you read the above changelog, a lot of what's written there is beyond my ability. I'm not saying Jeff's done anything wrong or incorrect, he hasn't, and he's done a great job .. I just think some peer review/assessment would be a good thing. One final thing .. if anyone else has made any changes to the code or to the CSS files, please ensure that you have updated the changelog accordingly. Oh .. and two more final things ;) .. Jeff, did you abandon the graphical representation of the ratings bar? I think the article view is still fine .. but someone should double check. And .. the membership stuff needs to be set back .. since we can't roll that part up anytime soon. Jeff, do you remember what needs to be commented out for that? Or Dan? You and Matt were discussing some CF hack or something (sorry if that's the wrong word .. not meant in a bad way) .. but the "post" commands to MG need to change on the current Join page to send commands to the two different lists. If weo hasn't been changed and we just run with the new list .. in a day's time, the membership will be out of synch. Those new subscribers would not have been added to the new list (cos we aren't copying the members twice)... and those new subscribers won't be getting theheadlines from the list .. and hence will not even know it exists. Also, Dean needs to make whatever changes necessary to send out theheadlines info to the new list (not thelist). The announcement letter that Rudy had originally written needs to be refined and sent to the new subscriber base. An article should be prepared for Community News announcing the new list. leo should be updated with the new list. These are not "wants" .. there needs to be an order in doing things. Everyone involved needs to be on board and to make sure that we can make the transition as smooth as possible. I don't care how you guys all do it, but COMMUNICATE. When the new code is updated on teo, then let Dan know (message to thesite) .. when that's done, we're in a better position to say something like at 6:00 EST we'll copy the membership base for thelist to theheadlines, roll up the code from test to live, send out the announcement letter, approve the community news article, and then dean can change where the headline script points to. Keep in mind, the above is just a rough estimate .. someone else can take the ball and get all the pieces together and make sure those individuals involved with key tasks are available and able to make the above changes at the same time. Changes to leo aren't as important as ensuring the above gets done relatively simultaneously. So, whoever wants to coordinate the various tasks with the different individuals involved .. go for it. But don't just create a new list and copy a subscription base without ensuring that the sign up (and edit pages) on weo have been updated to reflect the new list. I don't really have anything off the top of my head for HTML/CSS.  I
unfortunately do not have a lot of time to spend with someone.  Do you?

Cos there's lots of work to be done on the leo pages, if you want to guide
him on how to do it, send him the template files (headers and footers being
used on leo), and CSS file, then the individual pages from the list sub
options pages?  Do you know what I mean??  That's a few hours worth of work,
cos all those pages need to be edited and are stand-alone pages that get
dumped into MG.

IOW, take the source on the main page of leo .. then the info from the sub
signup pages etc. to be dropped into a full html page in MG.  This actually
needs to be done for all of the lists.  Since that all got lost when we
upgraded.

Only other thing I can think of would be assisting with tip classification
.. in Dean's absence, I think you or Jeff would be the best persons to
direct him on this.

be awesome.  Something like we had at codefest .. that worked well for us.

"What I'm Good For"
by David Wagner

CF: capable of fixing & troubleshooting, at this point, but probably not
actual new development. 3+ years of experience, but not enough time
devoted to it lately. I grok DB architecture, but I don't *like* it. :)

CSS and such: learning. Had to be dragged in kicking & screaming, but
I'm working on it.

Pixels: limited artistic abilities, but I'm always happy to slice,
optimize, reformat, recolor, & otherwise destroy the work of others. And
I'm pretty good at it.

I'd say my main skills (and interest) at this point are in content:
editing, formatting, organizing. Nitpicking. Being loudly opinionated.
I'm a good speller, but so is Word, I guess.

I'm sure there's more, but nothing is really coming to mind.

Gosh -- now I'm not so sure how I keep a job. ;P

+1 on getting a semi-formalized to-do list going. It would certainly
help me figure out how I can be useful, and it would probably work well
to get others involved, too.

Welcome aboard.  Until Matt can get new people added to the tip harvester
classification tool thingamajig ...

There's something else that needs to be done .. on a consistent basis and
that's to test out new stuff.  I won't repeat my long-assed email from the
other day (http://lists.evolt.org/thesitearchive/2002-April/005196.html) ..
but if either of you guys are interested in taking over the
testing/debugging/qa/qc part of teo (test.evolt.org) web site that would be
great.

Any problems or questions, just ask here.  If you see a bug, check it out on
the main weo (www.evolt.org) site, if its not duplicatable on there, post it
here as a [Bug - teo].  And vice-versa .. if you find something on weo but
it's just fine on teo, that's a good indication that that bug has already
been taken care of and will be rolled up the next time we roll test to live.

When testing various elements, its always a good idea to test on teo as a
logged in user, a general user (not logged in) and an Admin.  If you are
going to be doing this, let Jeff know and he can change your priv level on
teo.

Hope I haven't scare ya away!!!  :)

We'll get some kick-ass organization going very soon .. as this point I
can't even find where I packed the summer clothes and its 80F here in April
.. it was 34 last week.

Staring a new thread .. cos I feel like it ;)

Obviously many of us are coming to this latest scenario with very different
yet almost close ideas.  There are misunderstandings and grudges and past
grievances that may never get sorted out.

This is just a suggestion .. I hope those of you that *love* evolt as much
as I do will participate.  How about we all take a week or two to jot down
on paper (ok type on a web space or email):

What it is that each of us wants to do for evolt.org.  Some possible ideas:

* list administration
* editing/reviewing/approving articles
* answering general contact email (except for meo and lists)
* meo and all that it encompasses, creating new accounts, assisting users
* deal with installed software issues and plan upgrades (for all the
boxes/subsites)
* network administration - looking after servers (locally and remotely)
* hardware, bandwidth issues
* IA mixed with designing (or redesigning) various subsites
* actual pixel wranglers (designers/css)
* coders - to code in CF for teo/weo/leo(minimal) [and feo] and other sub
sites
* coders - to code in PHP for deo (in addition to Simon :)
* testers/content writers/developers for teo/weo
* database gurus - work on ueue (to a degree) and responsible for overseeing
all major database schema changes/required for all sites, including tuning
oracle
* data guys - individuals that can work with oracle, add tables, modify
existing schemas,  set up new schemas as required -  work approved by gurus
* advocacy issues - press releases
* financial issues - collecting of monies and review of disbursements
* sellers/promotional  - tagwear, mouse pads
* project managers in charge of various subsites and ensuring that the
things are getting done that relate to their subsite (e.g. weo, leo, meo,
deo)
* documenting specifications for new projects/ideas (project requirements
gathering, consensus, etc.)
* user/administrator documentation for each project (e.g. user's guide for
aeo)
* tip harvester (in addition to Dean)
* tip categorization
* xml, xsl feeds
* other tasks that I am sure to have forgotten.

I'm not talking about access or privileges or anything like that.  I'm
asking for how each person wants to contribute back to evolt in a manner
that they enjoy and that will make them feel like they are making a
worthwhile contribution.

So, make your own list .. determine what it is YOU want to do .. how much
time you could commit on a regular basis .. which tasks you would like to
undertake as a "backup/emergency" person when the need arises, etc.

This isn't about power, or titles (Admin) or anything like that.  It's a
fact-gathering exercise to determine what each person would like to do and
how they'd like to contribute.

Me, I'd like to be "Senior QA/QC Developer" on teo .. responsible for
testing, coordinating bugs/changes with Jeff (and others) .. reporting to
the person in charge of moving the code on teo to production (weo).  I'd
also like to help develop the teo web site in other ways, via mock ups or
directly in the code and Jeff (or someone else) wraps the CF around it.  I'd
also like to continue in the capacity of keeping things organized and in
order on thesite.  Making sure the various teams have enough people to get
things done, finding new volunteers, putting them together with a team
that's needed, etc.  Ensuring that things don't get lost in the shuffle and
that consensus has been achieved before implementation begins, etc.   [Note,
this is not comprehensive nor well thought out .. I'll answer the survey
when I have more time.]

I'd like to also send this to thesite for their input.  I think it's a
worthwhile exercise for everyone.

It would probably be easier to keep track of, if people send me their
responses or URL's and I'll coordinate everything together and post em for
all to see at the same time.

All submissions due to me by May 3rd (I'll see if Dan needs an extension
since he returns on the 1st .. anyone else requiring an extension, please
let me know)

If you don't want to participate at all .. that's fine too.

All this stuff has reminded me of another thing to add to the todo list.
Theforum approved seperating the user preference page's 'send notification
of comments' into two seperate options. One for if people have commented on
an article you've written, and a second for if people commetn on an article
you've commented on.

If someone has the time / resources can they please implement this.

Reading through the leadership topics that have come up recently, it seems
that everyone acknowledges that there are problems with the way leadership
works at the moment, but no one has any answers. I believe a good solution
to this problem would be something like this.

Admin gets turned into something more like BoD. All the activities that have
to do with running the site (answering emails, approving articles) get
broken up and taken out of that group. This way anyone who feels that this
is a way they can help evolt can participate in them (given of course that
they are considered trustworthy enough to speak on behalf of the
organisation - someone else has to vouch for them?).

All seperate tasks to do with running the site, are broken up and given a
leader or a small group of leaders from different timezones (so someone is
always there to make the decisions). They run that task according to a spec
of how they should run it which is decided upon by this body upon setting up
of that task group. If they need help with stuff they can make a to do list
and accept help from people who want to help out with whatever. They are
responsible for all additions though, so they have to review contributions
from volunteers to make sure they work properly. All leaders of the group
will have certain times they have elected to be responsible for - no
overlap, which would result in disputes. Say the day is broken up into 4
periods, you then have one leader from a timezone which is up and about in
that period, who has signed on as responsible for that period. If they can't
do the duties on a certain day they are responsible for finding a substitute
(they could still ask the site or the forum or whatever for volunteers, but
in the end they have to choose who does it). The leaders can have subleaders
for certain tasks if necessary. For example, you could have a leader for
approving articles, and then 'subleaders'. The subleaders could take on
articles when they're submitted, contact the author, fix up grammar, make
minor changes, get the author's approval for bigger changes etc, and then
the subleader deems the article ready. The leader then reads over it for
final approval and either sends it back or allows it through - this way you
can have a bunch of talented people working to help evolt, without disputes
happening. To take another example, subleaders could write replies to emails
and then submit them to the leader for approval.

The task area, as I said earlier would be decided upon by this body upon
formation of the task group - the rules would have to be pretty explicit in
covering what they were and weren't allowed to do, and covering the scope of
their task. for example, if the offer of hosting had come up after this was
formed, it would be the responsibility of the email group to respond to the
emails, but they would have to come to this group for getting their
responses. If it was alleged that the leader at a certain time had broken
the rules laid out for them, then it would be the responsibility of admin to
vote on whether they thought that person should be allowed to continue with
that activity or not. That would be admins sole charging under this new
scheme - thus delivering more power to the community, while still keeping a
tight rein on what happens.

The reason I think we need leaders for is that while groups are fine, they
take their time. there is always a need for decisive action sooner or later,
and if someone takes it without consulting the group then they will be
blasted later, even though the action may be necessary. It is also necessary
to have more than one so there is always one person around who'll be
responsible for that section - eg if a very important email comes through it
might need to be dealt with straight away, or a spammer needs to be removed
from a list immediately.

This system will ensure (I hope) that we don't run into these kind of
disputes again, that there is a clear system for getting things done, and
that everyone who wants to contribute will be able to.

Also, this should help with a move more towards a nfp. The admin group will
be acting more like a bod, and less like a correspondence group. This will
also structure things better for an easier transition.

One other thing - if the current offer of hosting doesn't work, I think we
should start looking for it elsewhere somewhere. While I absolutely
appreciate all the work Dan has done, there are definitely problems with it
being so closely associated with him. If we can host elsewhere, then it
becomes less of a Dan thing - whether blaming or standing up for. Also, when
the evolt name needs renewing, evolt.org should try to be a proper nfp by
then, i think, so that it can be renewed under evolts name. Also, moving the
hosting away should help hopefully, along with merchandise, other
fundrasiing, etc should help with relieving Dan of the hosting costs. This
has the benefit of helping relieve the financial burden from Dan, and of
making it seem more like the organisation - everyone - is in charge. The
face of evolt should be evolt, not Dan, as it is misconceived to be now.
Note, I have no problems with what Dan has done, I just feel evolt needs to
get a more professional face. Becoming an nfp should of course also help
bring in more donations.

Question - if evolt does colo the servers, can we still accept donations of
parts for the servers, or do we get stuck with what we have, and only be
able to take in software / money donations? Problem with this of course
being that without constant upgrades, and with constantly increasing
demands, no doubt we'd need to purchase entirely new machines to colo to
replace the older ones which would add to growing costs.

Problems I can see with this system -

People being jealous of someone else being the leader - this one really
relies on people acting grown up, is all.

People not letting others work in their section - for instance what has
happened with Adrian with the Admin at the moment (no finger pointing here,
just an example). Leaders could deny others access to their groups during
their times. Of course leaders need discretion in choosing who to let work
with them. They may not know someone well enough to trust them, or they may
simply have too many workers for them, after all too many cooks spoil the
broth (why broth, anyway? I'd much rather have chefs working on desserts, or
something *nice*). Maybe leaders could refer people to other groups which
need work liek the person is offering if there isn't room?

Not having enough people volunteer to cover all time sections of a
particular group. Not much you can do about this one.

Overlap of groups. for example, let's say there was a CMS group with Jeff as
the leader, a Database group with Rudy as the leader, and a server group
with Dan as the leader - how much access can Jeff expect, and when does he
start infringing on the others territories? (note, once again no commenting
on things here, just offering this up as a potential problem).

Rivalries within groups. Factioning within subleaders, or with leaders
against other leaders. I think this shouldn't be too hard to solve. It needs
to be understood that this sort of thing won't be tolerated - while it's
fine to disagree on how something should be done, there is a limit to the
disagreement, and how far people can go. If some person goes too far, then
IMO they should be out (depending on vote of Admin group of course).

Unsolved issues with this solution -

the overlap issue again. if dan is leader of servers, and jeff wants access
to servers, does jeff have to ask dan for access?

fragmentation - it's possible that this might fragment the larger groups of
evolt apart too far, which would of course not be good. somehow everything
needs to be broguht back to the central community - maybe theforum / thesite
could act as central hubs for co ordinating activites? or a new seperate
list? of course fragmentation to a small degree can be good, too. small
groups can work far more productively.

I'm sure I had more stuff to add to this, but I seem to have forgotten it
while I was writing the rest out. please tell me what you think, or offer
your own solutions to the problems which have been discussed - but please,
lets keep the problems out of dicsussion, unless they have some bearing on
the solutions. Besides, I think that everything has been said mostly -
everyone is just repeating the same points. Please no one take this as a
personal attack, and can everyone else please stop mentioning names (unless
it's just as examples for a scenario). Mentioning names, even if it isn't
fingerpointing will always seem to come across as it. Also, can we please
not keep discussing what has happened in the past - this leads to 'well I
did this', or 'I tried that' or 'so and so didn't want this', which leads
again to finger pointing, or restating the problems, which really isn't
helping anymore.

Nothing has made it through to me. Just lucky? I haven't seen an atttachment

You likely won't see an attachment in a real e-mail message from
evolt.org lists.  Dan has MG stripping them out for most lists.
However, from what I know, the virus messages only appear to be coming
from thelist or members of thelist.

I haven't seen them myself either but some of the admin members have
reported getting them perhaps as a result of harvesting e-mail
addresses from the old archives.

Sorry for the late reply.  I'm slowing starting to catch up with the
lists.  If you, or anyone else, sends me their weo login, I will set
them up so that they can classify tips.

And thanks to Alan for perservering.  Most of the other people gave up
on classifying tips a long time ago and didn't last half as long.  I
should've added a field in the table to keep track of who classified
the tips and we could've had a contest.

Hey ya'll .....

Just a note to bring myself up to date... I've been gone 6-8 weeks while I
sold my Condo in Toronto and moved into an apartment to Ottawa, Ontario.  It
has been an experience.. hehe.

So ......

What's happening on this list?  What's being worked on, what's in progress,
etc.

Headlines .. last I remember there needed to be some work done to add it to
the weo site.  However, there was a disagreement (i.e. not a consensus) on
how best to proceed with this and if in fact the addition of this list to
weo was necessary at this time or not.  Can someone (i.e. Dan, Jeff, Javier)
please provide an update on the status, what was decided if anything and how
we are proceeding?  Is there anything I, personally, need to do?

Project List .. Matt, did  you create anything?  Is it on my meo site, on
the wiki, or .. umm .. I dunno?  ;)

Dean, do you have enough individuals to look after tip classification?  Can
you teach Matt and/or Garrett how to go about adding individuals to be
allowed to classify tips?  If necessary, of course, I'm not sure if you have
enough people right now or not.

Adrian, what's up with the CSS files?  Have you taken over the
management/modifications of them?  Or, am I continuing to look after them?
Is there anything that needs to be done now?

The CMS Code ... has anyone volunteered to test/debug teo so that we may
roll the code up to production?  Ideally, we should have 1-2 testers that
follow this list closely, double-check that whatever changes get made work
correctly and as intended and that the changes correspond to the changelog
which gets filled out by the developers (usually .jeff).  Has anyone done
this in the past 6-8 weeks?  I sent out an email about two weeks ago asking
for volunteers to do this, but I don't think anyone responded.  So, anyone
???

Simon, any progress on your ver. 2 of the code for deo?  Do you still need
volunteers for that project?

Evolt redesign .. what's the status? Who's working on it?  Did we decide to
follow through with Miriam's suggestion of a "design contest"?

Garrett, I know you and I haven't had a minute to spare to even look at the
PHPGroupWare stuff.  What would you like to do with this?  Should we try to
slot in some time over the next few weeks to take a serious look at this
program?  Is anyone on this list familiar with this program, that wants to
help Garrett, Dan and I decide if it is something we want to pursue further,
mainly as a tool to help keep track of various projects, tasks,
responsibilities, etc. ?

The voting application .. now I realize that neither Garrett nor I have made
an assessment if the PHPGroupware voting system would be adequate or not to
meet our requirements as outlined by Amanda available somewhere on the Wiki,
but I can't seem to find it at the moment.  So assuming logically so, that
the PHP version will not meet our needs, the main requirement being to tie
into the weo DB, what's the status?  Who's working on this?  Jeff, logically
you should be leading .. are others working with you on this?

Matt, status on leo HTML/CSS updates that we discussed last week?  Did you
present the task to your colleague/friend?  Is this progressing?

Rudy, have you made an assessment and plan of the DB changes required to
categorize the various categories.  See this page for more detailed
information: http://members.evolt.org/Mishka/Words/cattypes.htm.  Note that
the final item "Proposed Changes" has already been approved per se on
theforum, so we can proceed with that in mind.  My understanding was that we
(thesite group members) had decided to proceed with the categorization of
the various categories.  So, what's up with the DB/Backend part of this?
Before Jeff (or someone else, under his direction) can proceed, the DB needs
a column added, the main categories (or types) defined and then the
individual categories assigned types.  Rudy, please let me (all of us) know
how this is proceeding, when you have a chance of course :)

Has everyone that wants to help out evolt.org on the backend, design, IA,
coding, HTML, CSS, etc. (anything related to site dev.) filled out the Fact
Finding Mission on the "wiki", located at::
