the performance of the codebase on weo *before* we rolled all the new
changes to teo up was poor.  i fail to see how adding all these new features
would result in anything but even more poor performance.

correct, the various queries are cached for 20 minutes.  that means that if
there aren't any hits to the site in a 20 minute timespan, the queries are
dumped from memory.  the next hit to the site fetches directly from the
database and caches them.

what's to wonder?  rating an article takes you back to the article page
showing your rating.  commenting on an article takes you back to the article
showing your comment.

i submitted an article recently and didn't have this problem.  it got
approved (i still happened to be on w.e.o. at the time) and i saw it on the
homepage.

regardless, there are solutions to these problems that don't involve
removing the caching from the homepage and all the performance problems
we'll see by doing that.  it just takes time to go through the system to put
things in place to account for this.
