I'm assuming your friend is UK-based as you mentioned a sum in pounds 
sterling.

I seem to recall that in the UK you have the right to return any goods 
bought "at distance" (used to mean mail-order, but applies to online 
transactions now as well) within 14 days for a full, no-quibble refund.

This legislation was designed to protect people buying stuff in 
catalogues where they only had a picture of the goods to go by.

I'm only 95% certain about this: why not try ringing the Citizens Advice 
Bureau?
