I may be wrong, or I may not completely understand your requirements here, but 
it seems to me this is something you would have to do using a server side 
tech. Database to store your original CAF no.s (or XML file maybe). User 
selection would need some sort of processor to set the variable, but how long 
is that variable tied to the user? Sometimes cookies are not your best option, 
IE will occasionally drop them and they might not be the best variable scope 
for the state management you desire. This is a nice complex little piece. And 
I won't say that Javascript isn't good for complicated projects (I've seen 
some incredible programs written almost completely in JS) but there are some 
things you can do much better, or should do, server side.
