[Javascript] [Beginner] What is going on with my show/hide function?

Hi

Replying to my own post - just to say how surprised I am to find so many 
responses to my question, and how disappointed I am to discover I was 
heading off in *such* a wrong direction. Still, I learn.

I haven't had time to try fixing it yet (I'm only a hobbyist coder 
nowadays) but I just wanted to pop in and say thanks so no-one thought I 
was ignoring all the excellent help.
