Also what Ron said about cutting off leaves (same reason)
and trimming the bottom of the stem to get a 'fresher'
cut - it lets more water get absorbed, apparently.

Probably wouldn't hurt to change the warm-water-sugar
mix often, if super-longevity is what you're trying for.
