[thelist] modified <pre></pre> blocks

All are WinXP:

IE6:
Looks purdy! Everything works just as intended, all the way down to 640x480
(didn't try going lower)

NN4.0:
Looks awful. Big font, purple background with black text, and no line
breaks... just one big messy paragraph of code.

Moz1.0:
No line numbers, and the long lines of code scroll off past the right-side
beige border without wrapping.

NN6.2:
Same as moz1.0

NN7.0(rc1):
Same as moz/nn6

I can provide screenshots if you'd like, jeff.

The CSS-capable, but non-IE browsers do not display a scrollable DIV like I
was expecting. It's just a horz. scoll of the whole page. From reading your
original post, it sounds like that might not be correct... see

Subject: [thelist] modified <pre></pre> blocks

hola evoltistas,

i've been playing around with trying to alter the way code is displayed in a
<pre></pre>, mostly in an effort to find a solution that will keep long
lines from breaking the design by pushing out beyond the boundaries of the
content area.

http://members.evolt.org/jeff/code/modified_pre_blocks.cfm

ie5+/win users with js enabled should see line numbers and long lines should
wrap. all other competent css capable browsers should show the <pre></pre>
blocks in a scrollable area. all other browsers should display normal,
undecorated <pre></pre> blocks.

i'm looking for feedback on the implementation, bugs, comments, suggestions,
etc.

thanks,

.jeff
