[Javascript] Element over the scrollbar

   They might be using createPopup to do this in Internet Explorer.  This instantiates a new popup object (only available in IE) that is essentially a new window.  Do the following search on Google:

site:msdn.microsoft.com popup

and you should get more info about this object (if indeed that's what Gmail is using in that browser).
