Hi Chris,

Or you could get a small UPS to even out the power signal. Can't 
brownouts cause permanent damage to equipment? I don't know enough 
about that sort of thing to say for sure.

But, at a guess, I'd say someone or something has given Dan's monitor 
a slap about. :)
