It sounds as if you can install your own perl scripts.
I would recommend http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/
They seem simple enough that the beginner should be able to install 
them, I would think.
(and avoid Matts Scripts, which *still* turn up at the top of a Google 
search, like the plague!)
