Which I think is reasonable under extreme load - just look at
how the news sites slimmed down on Sept 11th.

It'd be a temporary version of the home page without all the
sidebar updating stuff which resets when the load drops.

Again, something which can be triggered automatically when
load goes over x% for y time, with reset when it drops below
a% for b time, but with manual over-rides.
