By including CSS instead of using inline stylesheets, you are
 - making your HTML documents lighter,
 - separating content from presentation and thus
 - making your website much, much easier to maintain.

As regards the space before the slash for tags with no closing tag, I it's a XHTML requirement and I believe (though I'm at work and cannot test it now) that if you declare your document as XHTML strict, the parser will indeed cough if you omit the space. But you should probably try it for yourself...
